The image sensor used in infrared photography is sensitive to infrared light. To distinguish it from far-infrared, which is the region of thermal imaging, the section of the spectrum employed is referred to as near-infrared. The wavelengths utilized in photography span from 700 to 900 nanometers. Because film is sensitive to visible light as well, an infrared-passing filter is used, which allows infrared (IR) light to pass through while blocking all or most of the visible light spectrum (the filter thus looks black or deep red).
